Charles "Sonny" Eugene Loyd, born on March 22, 1948, peacefully passed away on February 4, 2025.
Sonny is survived by his daughter, Dawn, and her husband, Jerry, of Plant City, Florida; his son, Ronnie, and his wife, Joanna, of Phoenix City, Alabama; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one niece; two nephews; and several great and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren and his loyal companion of 15 years, his dog, Ace.
A proud Vietnam War veteran, Sonny was highly decorated for his service, receiving a Purple Heart, four Bronze Stars, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Combat Infantryman Badge, a Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, two Overseas Bars, and an Expert Sharpshooter qualification.
Sonny’s love for family, playing pool, bowling, and attending dirt track races defined his life. He had a kind and loving spirit, with a special bond to his dog Ace, who was truly his best friend. Sonny found comfort and joy in taking Ace on walks, together they made the phrase "man's best friend" come to life.
Sonny’s warmth, generosity, and love for his family and friends will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at the Fort Smith National Cemetery, located at 522 Garland Ave in Fort Smith, AR 72901.
