Claude Ray Thomas Jr., 74, of Lavaca, Arkansas, passed away on May 4, 2025. Claude was born in Danville, Arkansas, to Claude Ray Thomas Sr. and Maggie Helen (Kennedy) Morris. In 1971, he married the love of his life, Ellen (Weymouth) Thomas, and together they built a life centered around family, service, and community.
A proud veteran, Claude served his country in the U.S. Military. After his service, he remained active in his community, volunteering extensively with Lavaca Schools. He volunteered frequently driving the school buses for band and athletics. He served as an “assistant basketball coach” alongside Coach Reed. In recognition of his dedication, he was honored in the Lavaca Hall of Honor in 2022 for his contributions to youth athletics and helping to sustain the basketball program.
Claude had a deep love for the outdoors, especially fishing, and was an active supporter of local youth sports. He coached and umpired for the boys' club and often volunteered to drive buses for senior trips. Known for his warm and welcoming nature, Claude never met a stranger and was a steady, caring presence in the lives of many. He was there to help guide and support every kid that walked through the doors of Lavaca.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marianne Snipes.
Claude is survived by his devoted wife, Ellen Thomas; his children, Robert Thomas, Jennifer Bieker and husband Raymond, and Katrina Winchester and husband Travis; his grandchildren, Bryan Thomas, Tyler Winchester, and Kayla Bieker, Derek Duncan; his brother, John Thomas and wife Tammy; and his sisters, Diane Valentine, Martha Klinger and husband Michael, followed by numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Cremation is under the care of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
