James Clark Smith, age 83, entered his heavenly home on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Born on December 15, 1941, in Fort Smith, he was the cherished son of Robert Lee Smith and Bernita Fae Triebsch. After graduating high school, James pursued his education at West Ark College before making the brave decision to serve his country. In January of 1960, he joined the United States Navy, dedicating 22 years of his life to military service. Following his honorable service, he continued his strong work ethic at Whirlpool, where he spent nearly 40 years without ever calling in sick—a testament to his dedication and resilience.
James was an avid lover of golf, traveling, and spending time immersed in scripture. James was a man of few words, but his loved ones always knew that his heart and his thoughts were with God and his family. His unwavering faith was the foundation of his life, and he and his beloved wife, Darlene, were devoted members of First Baptist Church in Fort Smith.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and brother, whose quiet strength, steadfast faith, and dedication to his loved ones left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
James is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Darlene Smith; two children, John Albert Smith and wife Abby; and Adrienne Darlene Smith; one brother, Lynn Smith of Michigan; and two sisters, Rita Fitzpatrick of Kibler, Arkansas; and Sarah Sharum of Mulberry, Arkansas.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at Lewis Funeral Chapel, located at 4817 Kelley Hwy in Fort Smith, AR 72904. A Committal Service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2025 at the Fort Smith National Cemetery, located at 522 Garland Ave in Fort Smith, AR 72901. The family will be hosting a reception following the military service.
