James Richard Pettycord, fondly known as "Whacker," passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2024. Born on July 22, 1939, in Waveland, Arkansas, to parents Odus and Gatesy Pettycord, he lived a life full of love, hard work, and cherished memories.
James was preceded in death by his parents, his son Richard, his wife Giselle, his sister Donna, and his brother Amos. He leaves behind a loving family: his daughter Janet Danna, his grandchildren Ashley and Joshua, and his great-grandson Joseph Danna. He is also survived by his four sisters, Edna Barker, Laura Berry, Betty Bearden, and Brenda Harris, along with her husband Mike, and his Sister-in-law, Linda Pettycord, the wife of his late brother Amos.
James dedicated his career to the railroad industry, starting as a switchman for Rock Island Railroad in Little Rock. When R.I.R. went out of business, he moved to Fort Smith, continuing his career with Kansas City Southern and later Missouri Pacific.
In retirement, James found joy in simple pleasures. He enjoyed lunch outings at the senior center, playing bingo, watching his favorite shows on television, and attending Friday night dances. He was also an avid coin collector and enjoyed reading old western novels. His sense of humor and generous spirit brought warmth and laughter to those around him.
James passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
