Julian "Tip" Ray Abernathy III, 77, of Fort Smith, was called home to be with the Lord on February 15, 2025. Born in Roswell, New Mexico on May 22, 1947, to Julian Ray Abernathy Jr. and Juanita "Skip" Frances (Angher) Abernathy, Tip was a cherished son and sibling.
After completing his high school education, Tip earned his bachelor’s degree and enlisted in the United States Army in 1970, where he was proudly awarded the National Defense Service Medal. Following his service, he transitioned into a civil service career, contributing many years in administrative roles.
A devout Christian, Tip's faith was a cornerstone of his life. His love for music, particularly singing, led him to be an active member of the Fort Smith Chorale. He also had a deep passion for reading, which he enjoyed in his free time.
Tip was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Skip Abernathy, and his daughter, Blythe Abernathy.
He is survived by his wife, Jonna Abernathy; his seven children, Justin Abernathy, Jason Abernathy, Faith Freeman, Hope Abernathy, Charity Tackett, Rocket Abernathy, and step-daughter April Miller; eight grandchildren; his brother, William Abernathy; and his sister, Anne Abernathy.
Tip will be interned into the Fort Smith National Cemetery on April 1, 2025 at 10:00. In lieu of flowers, the family askes donations to be made to the Fort Smith Chorale. His cremation is under the care of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
