Lahoma Pauline Smith, 96, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025, at Oak Manor Nursing Home in Booneville, Arkansas.
She was born on July 27, 1928, in Checotah, Oklahoma, to Roy and Lillian (Dobson) Madewell. On March 19, 1944, she married the love of her life, Harry E. Smith, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. After their marriage, Lahoma returned to complete her senior year of high school. During World War II, while her husband served in the Army and endured time as a prisoner of war in Germany, Lahoma remained resilient and hopeful.
Following the war, the couple made their home in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Lahoma pursued a career in nursing, attending WestArk College. She became a charge nurse at Methodist Nursing Home, later advancing her training in dietary care and serving as a dietary supervisor at the same facility. Her compassion and dedication to caring for others defined much of her life’s work.
A devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church for many years, Lahoma also had a deep love for travel. In her younger years, she and Harry enjoyed traveling together. After his passing, she continued to explore new places through senior tours organized by the Barling Senior Citizen Center.
Lahoma was also a committed volunteer, sharing her time and talents with the Good Samaritan Clinic, Methodist Nursing Home, and the Barling Senior Citizen Center. Her baked goods were a special source of joy to many residents and patients, and her generosity left a lasting impression on her community.
She is survived by her daughter, Kaye Robertson and husband Gene of Charleston; four grandchildren, Tahnee Bowen and husband Mark of Charleston, Doug Robertson and wife Tara of Forney, Texas, Hunter Smith of Fort Smith, and Cheyenne Dyer and husband Wally of Cedarville; eleven great-grandchildren, Coady, Alex, Kyle, Lacey, Madelyn, Tyler, Harrison, Lyla, Halson, Carson, and Rhett; and two great-great-grandchildren, Kenadi and Melia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. Smith; her son, Hal Smith; her parents, Roy and Lillian Madewell; and her brothers, Bill and Don Madewell.
