Marie E (Sturgeon) Flanagan

Marie E. Flanagan, age 100, peacefully passed away on March 17, 2025. She was born on September 20, 1924, in Cecil, Arkansas, to George Sturgeon and Mae (Choate) Sturgeon.

Marie was a devoted woman, deeply committed to both her faith in Jesus and her family. A faithful member of Glad Tidings Church for many years, her greatest joy in life was her family, and she dedicated herself wholeheartedly to raising her children with love, kindness, and unwavering support. When she wasn’t caring for her loved ones, she enjoyed tending to her garden and canning the fruits thereof.  

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Jack Flanagan, eight siblings including Lamanda “Mandy” Deel of late, a daughter Evelyn Jennen, and son-in-law Gene Jennen.

Leaving behind a lasting legacy of faith, love, and devotion, Marie is survived by her children: Bill Flanagan and wife Debbie of Mulberry, Kaye Moore and husband Randy of Van Buren, and Terry Don Flanagan and wife Kim of Lavaca; as well as eight grandchildren: Jerry Pettigrew, Ben Jennen, Brent Flanagan, Darin Flanagan, Shelly King, Dustin Scott, Jackie Flanagan, and Jessie Flanagan. Additionally, she is survived by twelve great-grandchildren: Zach Pettigrew, Cassidy Pettigrew, Jerrett Pettigrew, Katelyn Gregory, Emily Clark, Cole Jennen, Lexi Harlan, Andrew Brown, Abby Rankin, Josh Rankin, Katelyn King, Jolie Scott; and three great-great-grandchildren: Memphis Pettigrew, Zander Pettigrew, and Jeweliet Rankin. She also leaves behind her sister, Elizabeth Blanton of Palestine, TX, as well as many other family members and friends who will cherish her memory.

Marie will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her love, faith, and gentle spirit will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.

A visitation will take place at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith for Marie on Thursday, March 20 from 6:00p.m. until 8:00p.m. A funeral service will be held Friday, March 21 at 10:00 am at Lewis Funeral Chapel. The service will be officiated by Brother James Villines. Pallbearers will be Brent Flanagan, Dustin Scott, Ben Jennen, Abby Rankin, Josh Rankin, and Eric Gallardo.

The family would like to express its sincere, heart-felt gratitude to the staff and administration at Methodist Village Health and Rehabilitation for their professional, loving and exceptional care of Miss Marie over the past 10 months. In lieu of flowers, the family would request that memorial donation be made to Methodist Village, Fort Smith, Arkansas.
