Mary Sue Petersen, age 78, of Fort Smith, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2025. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, to Pauline and Virgil Bassett, Mary Sue lived a life marked by compassion, creativity, and an unwavering dedication to those she loved.
A devoted special education teacher, Mary Sue dedicated her career to helping children with unique needs, touching countless lives with her patience, understanding, and heartfelt commitment. Beyond her professional life, she found joy in the simple beauty of flowers, the art of crafting, and the thrill of local auctions. These passions reflected her warm, expressive spirit and her appreciation for life's small treasures.
Mary Sue was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gary Meryl Petersen, and her parents, Pauline and Virgil. She is survived by her cherished son, Ty Petersen, and his wife Jacquelyn, as well as her treasured grandchild, whom she adored deeply. She was a loving grandmother, a devoted mother, and a dear friend to many. Her kindness, wisdom, and gentle presence will be remembered by all who knew her.
In keeping with her wishes, the family will honor her memory privately. Cremation is under the care of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
