Phom Phomakay Obituary

With profound sadness and deep respect, we announce the passing of Phom Phomakay, who left us peacefully at the age of 89. Born on September 1, 1934 in Kham City, Laos, Phom’s remarkable life was a testament to strength of character and steadfast devotion to family.

Phom’s journey began in Laos during a time of great hardship and conflict. During the Vietnam War, he bravely served alongside American soldiers in the fight against communism and rose to the rank of Lieutenant in the U.S. Special Forces. Following the war, Phom made the difficult decision to leave his homeland and ultimately led his family to America.

Upon arriving in the United States, Phom and his family faced the challenges of adjusting to a new way of life. Through hard work and resilience, he overcame significant language and cultural barriers as well as financial hardship to create a life in Arkansas that honored both his Laotian heritage and the American dream.

Phom found immense joy in his family and in the outdoors. A devoted parent and grandparent, he raised many grandchildren with wisdom and kindness. He delighted in sharing meals with his grandchildren, finding joy both in cooking traditional Lao dishes as well as eating fast food hamburgers. He was also an avid fisherman and farmer, spending most of his retired life outdoors. He could often be found fishing in one of his many ponds, tending to his garden, herding cows and swatting flies.

Phom is survived by his four children: Jasper Phomakay and wife, Lane; Christy Phouthakhio and husband, Mone; Mona Phomakay and husband, Cyrus; and Von Phomakay and wife, Boua. He also leaves behind seventeen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, along with many others who lovingly called him Paw or Agong. He will be reunited with his beloved wife, Bouakhay, following her in death after 71 devoted years of marriage.

Phom was a great man of great character who fought for a good life for his family. A life well-lived, a spirit unbreakable—Phom Phomakay will be dearly missed and fondly remembered. As we grieve his passing, we also celebrate the extraordinary life he led and the profound impact he had on everyone around him. May he rest in peace, and may his memory be a guiding light for all who knew and loved him.
